What is Biodical?

Biodical is a combination calcium and vitamin D and Magnesium nutritional supplement.

Calcium

Calcium is critical for bone health and maintaining healthy teeth. It is the most important mineral in the body.

Almost every one of our biological functions requires the use of calcium.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is rarely found in food naturally. It is not a true vitamin, but a steroid hormone that is produced in the skin by exposure to ultraviolet sunlight and converted to a more active hormone. Vitamin D is essential for the proper regulation of calcium and phosphate homoeostasis and bone mineralization.

Magnesium

Magnesium helps the body absorb calcium more efficiently and is essential in bone formation and growth. Recent evidence suggests that it is also beneficial in preventing Premenstrual syndrome. In addition, magnesium alleviates the constipation that can be associated with calcium intake.

Why should take Biodical?

Biodical is indicated in those requiring higher doses of vitamin D and calcium such as vitamin D deficiency, premenstrual syndrome, osteomalacia or malabsorption, osteoporosis; it was proven in the scientific studies that doses between 800- 1000 IU (two tablets) daily prevents fractures in women with osteoporosis.

Who should not take Biodical?

Women with a calcium disorder such as primary hyperparathyroidism (a gland disorder), hypercalciuria (excessive loss of calcium in the urine), elevated calcium levels, women with kidney stones or those with kidney disease should not take Biodical without consulting with their physicians.

What side effects may occur with other drugs?

Biodical can cause constipation and nausea if taken on an empty stomach. It is advised that Biodical be taken with meals. As with any calcium and vitamin D supplement, there is a potential for kidney stones. This is especially so if you have had a previous history of kidney stones and have been told of excessive calcium losses in the urine.

What interactions may occur with Biodical?

Hypercalcaemia has occurred when calcium salts are given with thiazide diuretics or vitamin D.

Bran and corticosteroids decreases the gastrointestinal absorption of calcium.

Calcium enhances the effects of digitalis glycosides on the heart and may precipitate digitalis intoxication.

Calcium salts reduce the absorption of a number of other drugs such as bisphosphonates, fluoride, some fluoroquinolones, and tetracyclines; doses should be separated by at least 3 hours.

Guidelines for use of Biodical

The recommended dosage is two tablets daily. This can be taken all at one time, or as one tablet in the morning and one tablet in the evening. It is best to take Biodical with meals or with juice.

Some women have reported that taking 2 tablets at one time during their PMS symptoms (headache, anxiety, or menstrual cramps) relieved their symptoms within 10 minutes.
